Dental Implants Maintenance & Aftercare Guide

Like all cosmetic dentistry treatments, the results and longevity of your treatment are dependent on two people: you and your dentist.

We always promise to do the best on our part, but poor care will lead to damaged teeth, no matter how good of a job your dentist does.

If you want your implants to last a long time, there are some basic housekeeping rules you need to follow.

The most important thing to consider is dental hygiene.

You can achieve the extra help of a hygienist, but most of this comes down to the correct brushing, flossing at home, and avoiding foods which could be harmful to your teeth or implants.

Some recommendations are:
  • Brush twice a day and floss regularly
  • Make sure your toothpaste is low abrasive and not harmful to your teeth
  • Be sure to reach under and around the implant crown with your toothbrush
  • Use a nylon coated interdental brush to clean hard-to-reach places

For optimum dental implant maintenance, you must be committed not only to thorough cleaning at home but also to regular check-ups with your dentist.

You should meet with your dentist or hygiene therapist every 3 – 6 months for a professional exam and cleaning, however, your dentist will advise you if your situation is different.

Additionally, you should return to your dentist for an annual check-up where we may carry out an x-ray if necessary to make sure everything is working as it should be.

General effectiveness

Implants are a highly effective cosmetic dental procedure (despite the effort needed on your part to keep them clean).

If you want your implants to last a long time, the way you care for them is a vital factor in their success.
