Endodontic treatment

Root Canal dentists in Poole, Dorset

Explaining root canals

Endodontics is an area of dentistry that specialises in treating the inside of the tooth (the root canal) where there is an infection of the pulp or nerves and vessels.

Our general dentists are trained to help patients in pain and have a high success rate when it comes to saving the tooth from extraction.

The treatment involves gently removing the infected and diseased pulp tissue and clearing out the infection from the root canals. The canals are then carefully cleaned and shaped before being sealed to prevent re-infection.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and might sound scary, but it is relatively straightforward and pain-free. If you’re a nervous patient, don’t worry—we’ll make sure you’re comfortable during your treatment and that the mouth is completely numb.

After we clean out the root, we’ll place a temporary filling. You’ll need to return to us a little later to have a crown placed on top of the tooth to protect it from further fracture and restore it to its full function.

Root canal costs

You can spread the cost

The price of a root canal will vary depending on the affected tooth, its position, and the extent to which it needs to be treated. Treatment with a specialist (endodontist) will also be more expensive.

The average cost of a root canal can range from £250 to £750, but that’s not the only cost you’ll have to consider. As root canals are typically completed with a dental crown, patients will also have to cover the cost of this prosthetic, which at our clinic costs £850. Plus, you’ll need a check-up, which, if you’re a new patient, would be £185, including all of your scans (£95 if you’re registered). So, the maximum total cost of your treatment will likely be around £1,785, which you can use dental finance to pay monthly if it’s more affordable. For example, using 0% dental finance, you could pay £148.75 per month.

Signs you need a root canal

  • Persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Darkening of the tooth, pimples on the gums (abscess)
  • Pain when chewing or biting, deep decay or a crack in the tooth
  • Swelling in the face or neck or a loose tooth

When the soft pulp tissue inside your tooth becomes infected or dies, it can lead to inflammation or, worse, an abscess surrounding the jawbone. This acute inflammation results in a lot of pain, especially when biting down and increasing tooth sensitivity, which could result in swelling at the end of the tooth root.

However, in some cases, when the nerve has died, patients might require a root canal without even noticing it. Many abscessed teeth can present with no symptoms and be pain-free until there’s a flare-up.
